According to the mechanic, the engine showed virtually no sleeve, cylinder or bearing wear.ABOUT THE KNIGHT ENGINETHE KNIGHT SLEEVE-VALVE ENGINE WAS DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED IN 1903, BY CHARLES YALE KNIGHT, AN ENGLISH-BORN AMERICAN ENGINEER. THIS ENGINE, IN VARIOUS CONFIGURATIONS, WAS PRODUCED UNTIL 1932.ALTHOUGH THE WILLYS-OVERLAND COMPANY WAS THE LARGEST USER OF KNIGHT ENGINES, IT WAS ALSO PRODUCED UNDER LICENSE AGREEMENT BY OTHER MANUFACTURERES. AMONG THESE WERE MERCEDES-KNIGHT, DAIMLER -KNIGHT, STERLING-KNIGHT, STEARNS-KNIGHT, FALCON-KNIGHT, YELLOW-KNIGHT TRUCK AND OTHERS.THE KNIGHT SLEEVE-VALVE ENGINE WAS PARTICULARLY NOTED FOR ITS RELIABILITY, SMOOTH QUIET OPERATION AND LONG MOTORING LIFE WITH LITTLE MAINTENANCE.THERE ARE NO POPPET VALVES, CAMS, SPRINGS OR TAPPET ASSEMBLIES OF A CONVENTIONAL ENGINE.THE SLEEVES ARE ACTIVATED BY SMALL CONNECTING RODS OPERATED FROM A SECOND CRANK OR CONCENTRIC SHAFT. THIS SHAFT IS TIMED BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS TO THE MAIN PISTON-CONNECTED CRANKSHAFT. THE CYLINDER HEADS ARE LIKEWISE UNIQUE. EACH CYLINDER HAS AN INDIVID-UAL HEAD PIECE, WHICH IS OF A HEMI-DESIGN, AND FITTED THROUGH THE TOP OF THE CYLINDER BLOCK INTO THE TOP OF THE INNER CYLINDER SLEEVE. TWO RINGS ON THE HEAD PIECE PROVIDES THE NECESSARY COMBUSTION CHAMBER SEAL.THE KNIGHT ENGINE ALSO UTILIZED A UNIQUE PATENTED OIL PURIFIER, REFERRED TO AS A RECTIFIER. HOT EXHAUST GAS PASSING THROUGH THE RECTIFIER BURNED-OFF ANY MOTOR OIL CONTAMINATES. MOTOR OILS OF THIS ERA CONTAINED CONSIDERABLE CORROSIVE SULFER AND SALTS. THE THIN LIGHT BLUE EXHAUST EMISSION OF A KNIGHT ENGINE IS DUE, IN PART, TO THE NORMAL OPERATION OF THE OIL RECTIFIER.ONE FINAL NOTE OF INTEREST.
