1974 Volkswagen "Thing"

I bought my 1974 VW Thing in 2019 and shipped it from a car Museum in St. Louis, MO to Palm Springs, CA where it has been ever since. I was told that it was owned by a Major League Hockey player with the St. Louis Blues who was downsizing his collection and placed it with them on consignment.

I wanted it to be a reliable and enjoyable car, so when it arrived, I sent it straight to a vintage VW Specialist nearby and he recommended an engine and transmission rebuild, which he did for me. It has been my daily drive ever since, travelling mostly short distances around Palm Springs. Aside from regular oil changes and other periodic maintenance, it’s been an absolute pleasure to own and drive. It has a fiberglass hard top roof, that is very easy to take on and off.

This is a 50 year old car, so I'm sure it has imperfections, but if you are interested in a Thing that is in very original unmodified condition (although I suspect the paint has been touched up at some point and it has larger than normal wheels/tires), has no obvious rust, has been re-conditioned back to original engine and transmission specifications, I suspect this is one of the best out there.

The move to California hasn't worked out, so I am moving back to New York City where it is impossible to own a car. I am perfectly happy to answer questions and discuss terms if you'd like to reach out.

I am going to place it on consignment with a local classic car specialist firm (McCormicks - https://www.classic-carauction.com/) who will handle the sale on my behalf. This listing is intended to get some additional exposure and provide some price guidance, but otherwise, everything will be handled on my behalf by McCormicks who will obviously deduct a commission from the sale proceeds.
