Model year 1990 was when the fifth-generation Celica debuted, and with it came a new GT-Four/All-Trac Turbo (coded “ST185”). Its curvaceous new wide-body design–a narrow-body version was available in Japan for tax purposes–sported a functional hood scoop and unique air dam and fog lamp treatment. The four-wheel-drive car’s carry-over mechanicals were largely upgraded; the fully independent suspension consisted of MacPherson struts, lower control arms, coil springs and an anti-roll bar in front, and MacPherson struts, one trailing link and two lateral links, coil springs and an anti-roll bar in the rear. Brakes were still four-wheel discs, 10.9 inches and vented in front and solid and 11.3 inches in back.

  • shortened shift lever throw and clutch pedal travel.
  • triple cone synchromesh on gears 2 and 3, up from double cone.
