Vehicle Details
Introduced during the transitional year of 1968, the Porsche 911L was essentially the U.S.-spec
version of the company’s high-performance 911S. The "L" designation was shorthand for Lux or
the luxury model. While slightly detuned to comply with American emissions regulations, the
911L, nevertheless, delivers breathless performance from a finely tuned, 130 hp, 2.0-liter flat-six
engine.
Another significant detail about this 911L is that it is a rare example of Porsche’s soft-window
Targa. Introduce to the automotive world by Porsche engineers, the Targa top 911 offered a
removable roof panel while retaining an integrated rollbar. This unique strategy was in response
to growing concerns about rollover safety as, in the mid-1960s, convertible sportscars were
incredibly popularity, yet viewed by the public as dangerous.
This innovative roof system granted top-down freedom without sacrificing structural integrity.
While later model years incorporated a rear glass window, this 1968 model pairs the Targa top
with a flexible plastic rear window that can be unzipped and tucked away for a true open-air
experience. This first-of-its-kind design gave drivers and their passenger the exhilarating
experience of riding in a convertible while retaining the safety and rigidity of a coupe.
It is also important to note that the 911L we are showcasing is number 10 of only 134 soft-
window Targas imported to the U.S. in 1968, making it an exceptionally rare example of the
model. Due to this low production number, this 911L is perhaps one of the most distinctive cars
amongst an already elite group, as Targas have become one of the most coveted 911 variants
among today’s automotive collectors.
Like its 911 brethren, this 911L soft-window Targa stands as a symbol of Porsche’s inventive
brilliance during the marque’s golden era—a vehicle that is rare amongst its peers, ever elegant
and always ready for long, spirited drives.
