1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 – Factory M40 TH400 – Placer Gold – Fully Restored Survivor
This 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is a beautifully restored and tastefully preserved example of Chevrolet's iconic second-generation performance car. Finished in its original Placer Gold with painted black stripes over a Saddle interior, this Z28 is a standout in both appearance and performance. Showing just 60,000 miles (believed original), the car has been lovingly kept, driven sparingly, and garage-stored since restoration. A proud member of the Illinois Camaro Club owned the car since 2013, ensuring its preservation and mechanical excellence.
Exterior
The factory-original Placer Gold paint was expertly reapplied during a full restoration completed around 2012 in Florida. The finish is deep and rich, accented by black painted rally stripes and sitting over all original GM sheet metal, including original quarters—something rarely seen. The body is laser straight, and we find no signs of prior accident damage or major repair. There are a few very minor cosmetic imperfections to note: some small blisters on the lower edges of both doors, a small repair inside the driver's door jamb where the rubber door stop rests, and a few minor touch-ups. Overall, the car presents incredibly well and draws attention wherever it goes.
Interior
Inside, the car was originally optioned with Sandalwood vinyl, now reupholstered in a Saddle vinyl that matches the car's period-correct aesthetic beautifully. The cabin is clean, odor-free, and extremely tidy. The dash, console, and iconic horseshoe floor shifter are all in excellent condition. Gauges are clear and functioning, and all interior features work as they should. The radio is currently inoperable—it appears to be a newer aftermarket unit, and may simply need power restored. Door panels, seats, headliner, and carpet all present very well.
Under the Hood and Body
Power comes from a strong 350ci V8 that is believed to be original to the car, but was decked during its rebuild and no longer carries the matching VIN stamp. The engine makes excellent power and was fully rebuilt during the restoration. It's paired to the factory-optioned M40 Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission, with the correct 2,200 rpm stall torque converter, delivering quick, firm shifts and a responsive driving experience. A newer radiator and thermostat housing have been installed to ensure consistent cooling. Underneath, the chassis is clean, solid, and in excellent condition with no underbody rust or damage—reflective of the car's garage-kept life and fair-weather use only.
Driving
This Z28 is a blast to drive. It starts effortlessly, idles smoothly, and makes great power under throttle. The M40 transmission is tight and responsive, and the factory stall converter delivers strong off-the-line performance. Steering is precise, suspension is composed, and braking is straight and confidence-inspiring. The car rides on newer tires and tracks well at speed. Everything feels sorted, and it's very clear this car has been maintained with care and driven with pride.
Final Thoughts
If you're looking for a turn-key second-gen Camaro Z28 with the right colors, the right options, and a high-quality restoration on original GM metal, this is your car. Its honest presentation, excellent mechanical condition, and factory M40 transmission make it a rare and desirable piece. Whether you're looking to enjoy it on the open road or show it proudly at local events, this Z28 is ready for its next enthusiast caretaker.
