1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 305 Automatic
If you’ve been looking for a 1982 Trans Am to restore you won’t find a better candidate than this car. Before I describe this car I encourage you to look at my feedback to feel confident that what you are buying is accurately described. I have been a seller on EBay for over 20 years and pride myself on honest descriptions. Also, please ask any and all questions you have and I will answer them as best as I can.
I bought this car last September. It has been off the road since 1994 and has 81,394 miles on it currently. I believe it has only had one prior owner. I bought it from an estate sale in California and had it shipped to me in Iowa. I was told the prior owner took it to California from Massachusetts in 1994 after she graduated college but it would not pass California emissions so it was put aside in dry storage and it sat there for 30 years untouched. The owner passed away and that is when I bought it. It is 100% rust free as the pictures show. Although the paint on the hood and under the hood there is paint surface rust. It is amazingly solid over all body wise for a 43 year old car.
Interior: Tan leather PMD interior. It is in good over all condition with normal wear to be expected for an unrestored car. Again, there is no rust in the top bar. T top bags are still present and the rear cargo cover pulls out and goes in as it should. No cracks in the door panel plastic tops or sill plates. The gas gauge and oil pressure gauges are not working and will need to be addressed. Other than that everything seems to work. Still has the original radio that works. None of the wiring has been hacked up or messed with. Carpet and some interior panels have typical fading as to be expected. But it is complete and over all pretty nice for being 43 years old.
Exterior: There are a couple small dings and imperfections in the body but it is rust free and the underside is amazingly clean. Floor boards are solid with no rust issues. Quarters are solid with no rust issues. Wheel wells are solid with no rust issues. All spats and body flares are present and in good shape. All glass is good and the windshield is good. No rust on the a pillars or windshield surround metal. The car has not been washed or cleaned in 31 years. The paint is not in good shape but with some effort and proper cleaning equipment it could probably be brought back to somewhat of a presentable condition. The hood would probably need a repaint. But for a proper restoration it certainly needs to be completely repainted. I have bought new interior and exterior rubber window seal moldings including the triangle seals which will be included. I also have new window motors that will be included though the original motors do still work. But if you’re taking the door panel off to replace the weather strips I figured you might as well replace the motors while you’re in there.
When I got it there was one tire that would not hold air so I bought 4 new tires for it. I only mounted the one just so I could get the car mobile. The other three will be included so it will have four new tires for the next owner. The exhaust is original and in good shape and sounds good.
Drivetrain: The original 305 engine runs and the original 3 speed transmission seems to shift as it should. All the emissions and air conditioning is intact and unmolested. Nothing under the hood has been tampered with or removed. I changed the oil, all filters and the coolant. I also changed the spark plugs and wires. The spark plugs were original and had a lot of carbon build up which is probably why it would not pass California emissions and was taken off the road 31 years ago. I replaced the air pump as it was seized. I bought and installed a newly rebuilt original quadrajet carburetor. The car starts and runs but still needs some work as it seems to load up and not run well after a few minutes. I dumped 5 gallons of gas in it but have no idea how much old gas it had in it and it may just need to have the old gas burned out of it. Again, it starts and runs, but I would not call it road worthy yet. It still needs some work to be reliable. The power steering has a leak. This car has been off the road for 31 years. I have done the basics to get it to where it is ready to be handed off to its new owner. I have only put 6 miles on it, all just driving around my block. It is registered as it legally should be but I have not insured it as I never intended to keep it. I just wanted to get it back on the road and then sell it. I believe it is at that point now. I have an eBay store and have parted out Camaros and Firebirds for over 20 years. There are not many cars I have saved over the years but this one was worthy as this year and color combination is desirable.
In summary this car is still a project but is very solid over all. It runs but still needs some work to run down the road properly. As you would expect after sitting 31 years it seems to have a fuel delivery issue to be solved still. It needs the other three tires installed (included in sale). And it needs a committed new owner to give it the love it deserves. I have taken it as far as I can and want. Time to send it on its way. I have already spent far more money on it than I should have. With the original amount I paid for it, shipping it from California, all the parts I have put into it I am going to lose a fair amount of money. I have parted out hundreds of these cars over the years and saved very few precisely because of this. I decided to save this one. But I am ready to let its next owner love it. It’s time to let it go. Remember this car has been off the road for 31 years. So expect to put more time and effort in it before it is road worthy. It will not drive to its new owners home and will need to be trailered or shipped. It does start and run well enough to drive onto a trailer or shipping truck. I have done as much as I can and am willing to do. Please look at the pictures closely and I have videos of it starting and running I can send. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. Thanks for looking.
