This 1975 MG Midget is a wonderfully preserved example showing a believed original 28,839 miles and what is also believed to be its original and rare Tahiti Blue paint. The paint and body are in good condition considering their age, with minor imperfections such as dings, chips, and scratches, but the car presents very well overall. There are no signs of accident damage when inspecting the panels or undercarriage. The structure is solid, with only minor surface rust in some areas of the suspension and undercarriage, and a small amount visible on the lower rear rocker (see images).
The interior remains in remarkably good original condition. The upholstery is free of rips, tears, or stains, and the convertible top is in good, usable condition, showing some expected clouding in the rear windows.
The engine bay, though aged in appearance, is a time capsule—unmodified and complete, just as it would have left the factory. The 1500cc engine starts immediately every time, runs well, and holds excellent oil pressure. It maintains proper operating temperature, even in Southern California heat. The engine pulls confidently through the rev range, and the car has no trouble keeping pace with modern traffic. The 4-speed transmission shifts cleanly through all gears with no grinding or popping out.
Driving Impressions:
The driving experience is surprisingly engaging and well-balanced—somewhere between a Lotus Elan and an MGB. The steering and controls are lighter than those of the MGB, with a similarly balanced feel in cornering and response. While it doesn’t match the speed, braking, or ultimate grip of a Lotus Elan, the Midget offers an accessible and charming experience with excellent feedback, making it an enjoyable car on both winding roads and in-town drives.
MG purists will appreciate this example’s originality—unmodified and as-delivered—offering an excellent base for either preservation or light restoration. In California, the car is smog exempt, which opens the door for potential performance enhancements without affecting registration.
Known Issues:
The drivetrain would benefit from new engine and transmission mounts, as there’s a light thud from the driveline occasionally contacting the tunnel cover during engine movement. Additionally, the front lever shocks are due for replacement, as they currently feel loose and bouncy.
