This 1961 MGA is a beautifully sorted example that blends classic British roadster charm with thoughtful mechanical upgrades for enhanced drivability and performance.
Under the bonnet, the original 1600cc engine has been replaced with a highly desirable5-main bearing 1800cc MGB engine, fitted with a big valve head and a performance camshaft. With under 5,000 miles since build, the motor delivers brisk, linear power and excellent tractability. Starting is easy and reliable thanks to proper tuning by an experienced British Leyland mechanic who owned the car for several decades.
Power is sent through afully synchronized gearbox with straight cut gearsandoverdrive in 3rd and 4th. Theclutch operates smoothly, and theengine bay is clean and tidy, featuring numerous thoughtful upgrades:
- Coolant overflow reservoir
- Enhanced heat-shielding for the carburetor float bowls
- Custom radiator fan shroud
- K&N air filters
- Spin-on oil filter with remoteoil cooler
The chassis is solid andfree of rust, having lived its life inCaliforniawith no signs of accident history.Handling is superb, aided by a rebuilt suspension, polyurethane bushings, ananti-sway bar, andMichelin Pilot tires. Astainless steel exhaustand newer fuel tank round out the mechanical enhancements.
Thepaintworkpresents withexcellent depth and gloss, showing minor blemishes consistent with a well-kept driver (see images). Chrome components—bumpers, grille, and trim—show some patina and wear.
Finished in iconicBritish Racing Greenover anew black leather interior, the cabin is clean and free of rips, tears, or excessive wear. It includes asoft top, spare tire, andfull tool kit, though it does not have a tonneau cover or side curtains.
This MGA strikes a rare balance between period-correct elegance and purposeful upgrades. Its drivetrain and chassis enhancements transform it into a much more usable and enjoyable sports car—while retaining all the styling and character that make the MGA so beloved.
Replicating this build to the same level of detail would be both time-consuming and costly. If you’re seeking a sorted, tasteful, and enthusiast-built MGA that’s ready to enjoy, this example delivers.
