History:
TheMercedes-Benz W128is a 6-cylinderluxury carproduced byMercedes-Benzas the220 SEfrom 1958 to 1960 as asedan,coupé, andcabriolet. A more powerful version of the near-identical W180220 S, it gained the fuel-injectedM127version of Mercedes' 2.2L (134.3cuin) M180 engine, and an 'E' in its name forEinspritzung, German for petrol injection. The 220 SE was the last new model of the "Ponton" range which had design and styling roots tracing to the 1953W120sedan it was derived from.
At the time, the cabriolet was priced at DM23,400/$8,091, ten-percent aboveCadillac's exclusive, high-endEldorado Biarritzconvertible.Nearly every interior surface of the coupé and cabriolet was covered in wood or leather, and matching leather luggage was available. However, power steering, windows, air conditioning, and anautomatic transmissionwere not available (although an automatic clutch was offered with the column-mounted 4-speedmanual transmission). The car was factory equipped with a double-wishbone front and single-joint rear axle suspension with coil springs, and stopping power is provided by vacuum-boosted hydraulic drums. The pinnacle of the W128 range was the fuel-injected 220 SE Cabriolet, introduced in 1959 and produced for just a short time frame through October 1960.
