Vehicle Description

Vehicle Overview

Up for sale is our 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe project car—an original C-Code 289 V8 with 3-speed manual transmission. This Mustang is finished in Vintage Burgundy with a black standard interior. Originally purchased in Indiana in 1976, it was driven until 1987 and has been stored ever since. We’re parting with it as we downsize for retirement and travel.

This is a complete project car, offered in #5 condition (restoration candidate). It is not currently drivable and will require a full restoration, but it remains a solid foundation for the right enthusiast.

Key Details

  • VIN: 6T07C163871
  • Assembly Plant: Metuchen, NJ
  • Build Date: December 1965
  • DSO (District Sales Office): Philadelphia (Code 23)
  • Body Style: Hardtop (65A)
  • Paint Code: X – Vintage Burgundy
  • Trim Code: 26 – Black Standard
  • Axle Code: 6 – 2.80:1
  • Transmission Code: 1 – 3-Speed Manual

Condition Summary

  • Exterior: Repainted in 1981–1982 with prior bodywork. Panels are mostly solid with typical rust at the wheel wells and lower body. Driver's door does not close. Undercarriage has extensive rust from winter use and likely needs new floor pans and frame rails.
  • Interior: Original interior with damage to the driver’s seat from mice. A salvaged center console—likely from a '66 model—was added and painted black to match. AM radio condition is unknown; heater fan is non-functional.
  • Powertrain: The 289 V8 engine (a period-correct replacement from a 1965–66 Mustang, installed ~1977–78), clutch, and 3-speed transmission are present but need rebuilding. The engine turns over using the starter.

Recent Work & New Parts

To assess condition and electrical systems, several components were recently replaced:

  • Battery and tray
  • Engine wiring harnesses
  • Headlights, turn signals, parking lights
  • Spark plugs, ignition coil, starter solenoid
  • Fuel pump and filter
  • Radiator hoses, fan, and fan hardware
  • Water pump
  • High/low beam switch
  • Oil and antifreeze replaced
  • Horns installed

Included Parts

  • New oil pan with gasket
  • New Pertronic Flame Thrower distributor
  • New additional fuel pump
  • New full door locks and latch hardware (handles, linkages, clips)
  • New interior heater box with core, and gasket kit
  • Electronic and physical manuals

Known Issues / Needed Repairs

  • Master cylinder and rear leaf springs need replacement
  • Fuel lines and possibly fuel tank require replacement
  • Interior heater assembly and cooling hoses needed
  • Tires are old but hold air (except spare, which doesn’t)

Pickup & Transportation

This car is not drivable. It must be transported using a flatbed trailer with a winch. Towing on its own wheels is not advised due to rear spring and structural rust issues.

History & Ownership

We have owned this Mustang since the late 1970s when we purchased it from a private party in Indiana. It was a daily driver for over a decade and holds deep sentimental value. The title is clear and has been transferred to Wisconsin.
