Vehicle Description

Feeling The Need for Speed: 1968 Mustang GT+ GT390+GT/CS California SpecialLooking for a standout True American Muscle car to own and show? This 390 GT is more than just a Mustang with a monster motor—it’s a bold symbol of an era obsessed with the NEED FOR SPEED! This stunning GT 390 machine is a factory Ford Shelby-ized Mustang having received Shelby; side scoops, trunk spoiler, stripes, hood locks, fog lights, rear tail panel, special front grill, pop-open gas cap, plus specialized badging. It was known as the GT/CS California Special, a Shelby appearance package from the factory. The GT/CS option was designed by Shelby American utilizing Shelby parts with modifications being made by hand as vehicles rolled down the FoMoCo San Jose CA assembly line. This was a California-exclusive Limited-Edition Mustang used as a marketing tool designed to showcase how a Mustang could be ordered directly from the factory from "mild to WILD"! This is 1 of only 24 Mustangs produced that received ALL THREE possible GT options; GT+GT390+GT/CS. From your first glance at this rare GT 390 Supercar, you know it's something special and in a league of its own!

GT/CS Shelby appearance package

*Shelby built two Prototype GT500S/C “Super Coupes”. The first was built in 1967 and called "Little Red". The second was built in 1968 and called "The Green Hornet". Both prototypes were based on “S” code GT 390 Coupes like this one. A correctly optioned GT + GT390 + GT/CS like this one was Fords realization of Shelby's GT500S/C "Super Coupe” that Shelby never put to production.

*RARE: with Shelby like styling and performance coupled with extremely low limited production numbers make the GT 390 GT/CS one of the most exclusive high-performance Mustangs ever to roll off the FoMoCo assembly line. Most likely, you have never seen a GT 390 GT/CS in person. *Investment-Worthy – 1968 + Mustang + GT + GT390 + GT/CS + Shelby design + Limited Edition + rare + documented + low miles + survivor + benchmark qualities & gorgeous. Most 390 powered mustangs were beat and driven into the ground. This is certainly in the top 1% of the best GT 390 Mustang unrestored undercarriages you will find and is dry as the Sahara Desert. A valid argument could be made that this very rare '68 GT 390 GT/CS is the top tier level of collectability out of all the 390 GT Mustang years, body styles, and models made.
  • GT/CS by the numbers: a limited number of 4118 produced (all engine sizes included)
  • Only 215 received the High-Performance GT 390-4V “S” code engine
  • Only 54 of those had the bulletproof C6 auto trans
  • Only 24 (estimated) of all the S codes received the GT Equipment Group package
  • Only 6 of those (estimated) would have the C-6 auto trans
  • Now those are all low numbers! Plus this is one of the best unrestored survivor 390 GT Mustangs you will see bar-none.
Performance: Ford's impressive specifications for the “S'' code engine are: 390 c.i. = 6.4 Liters / 325 HP @ 4800 RPM / 427 FT LBS Torque @ 3200 RPM / 10.5:1 Comp. Any early Mustang possessing the potent GT 390-4V engine alone is a rare and highly prized find today. What was included in the GT package? By additionally opting a GT/CS with the GT Equipment Package, the customer received: dual exhausts with "quad-chrome-tips" that protruded through cut outs in the rear valance, 14 X 6-inch wide GT-style argent-painted wheels (not chrome) with "GT" hubcaps with bright trim rings, performance Wide-Oval tires, larger front Disc brakes, heavy duty front sway bar, and a heavy-duty suspension components plus beefier shocks and springs.Documented Facts: Special ordered on May 15, 1968, by Sutton-Brock Ford Motors in Alamogordo, New Mexico for STOCK DEALER INVENTORY. It was received on June 10, 1968, and retained by the dealership for over a three-month period. It was then sold on Sept 16, 1968, after the closeout of the '68 model year. The official FoMoCo-Marty report, orig dash VIN tag, orig Door VIN plate, VIN sequence plus known GT/CS build dates all validate and authenticate this as the "real deal" GT+GT390+GT/CS. Notable Features: Being this was a dealer promotional vehicle, it had to impress customers on every level including the interior, so it was ordered with the rare and beautiful parchment interior. Ford Motor Co was heavily into sponsorship racing and their slogan during this era was “what wins on Sunday sells on Monday”! So, it is no surprise that the exterior color choice of Meadowlark Yellow with black hood stripes was chosen to closely replicate the Ford sponsored Shelby Terlingua Racing Team Mustang driven by Jerry Titus. This was as close as you could get to ordering a Shelby Coupe Trans-Am replica from the factory, a precursor of things to come with the introduction of the famed Trans-Am Boss 302 replicas that followed in 1969. The other options ordered were C-6 Select-shift trans, special Wide Oval Tires, Power steering, Power disc brakes, Am radio, and Tinted glass. This vehicle is in remarkable shape for a Mustang this age. It has many of its benchmark survivor qualities preserved such as the original factory applied finished on the undercarriage. Many areas such as under the hood, backside of trunk lid, door jamb hinge areas, floorboards, etc still appear to have original paint. Much of the interior, chrome, weather stripping, etc seem to be original as well. many of the wire looms under the dash have the original tags. You rarely find a vehicle this well preserved, especially in a GT 390 Mustang as most were beat. Special sale terms:This vehicle is over 50 years old so there is no warranty.
