The next you might notice are the wheel covers. These are locking and willstay on the vehicle securely covering the metal rims and lug nuts. No worries about losing one on a tricky turn off the freeway. When the center caps are released you unlock the hubs with a special tool (included) for service.
I particularly like the exterior styling decisions. While this may draw comparison to a late model Town Car or Grand Marquis with its length and dimensions the Roadmaster sets itself apart with clean body panels on both sides that give it a yacht-like, aerodynamic appeal. The sleek line of the door guards draw the eye all the way back to the trunk and bumper. The fuel door is missing from both rear quarters, but no need to decide which pump to use at the gas station. The fuel cap is easily found in the rear center of the Roadmaster behind the flip-down license plate. Additionally, a proud Buick emblem is embedded in the hood ornament and the Roadmaster nameplate is visible on the rear quarter pillars. Front 'BUICK' vanity plate included.
I've owned this 1993 Roadmaster since 2023. I really like this car. This vehicle has everything without the fluff. What I'm mostly impressed with is the performance compared to modern day vehicles. I can get on and off the highway with confidence. I can trundle around town with the A/C on in traffic. The ride quality is superb. The buttons and dials are chunky, yet soft to the touch. The automatic climate control works perfectly and is my favorite comfort feature. There are no critical issues with this vehicle, as is, in my professional opinion. However, I will disclose what I know since owning it.
The straight sell is this is roughly more than double the age of the average vehicle on the road today. It's definitely a great daily driver, but along with time several updates and changes have been made over the years by previous owners and myself. I've found that the automatic ride-height air suspension and compressor have been replaced with simple air shocks. These are manually inflated and deflated by a regular tire valve near the fuel cap behind the license plate. I've examined the air lines and shocks and found them to be an effective and quality installation. The air suspension works wonderfully even with over a hundred pounds of my family's camping gear in the trunk and back seat.
The headlamps were too dim for modern roads and the tinted windows at night and they've been replaced with LED drop-in replacements that are much brighter. No wiring was modified or changed and the bulbs can easily be replaced with standard equipment halogen at any time. The reverse lamps are also brighter LEDs to help compensate in the dark. The headlamps are adjustable and aimed correctly to avoid blinding oncoming traffic, but they are very bright anyway. The aiming is also affected by the rear end ride height determined by the air shocks.
A previous owner added "fog" lamps bolted onto the radiator support hidden behind the front grille. They turn on and off with headlamps and produce an amount of light. I repaired some wiring and replaced a bulb for these lamps since I've owned it. They give the vehicle a distinct look with a warm glow behind the grille at night. They point nearly 45 degrees down and ahead and are high up behind the grille so are not visible to oncoming traffic at all.The hood ornament was once replaced with a previous owner's custom ornament. Original ornament is restored and I plugged the drilled holes with greased rubber grommets to stop any corrosion.
Everything exterior on this vehicle speaks for itself and is what it seems. The paint is in very good condition. The clearcoat is in very good condition and water still beads up and runs off the last wash and wax. Some rock chips in the hood should be expected. I will say that occasionally a new segment of the gray rubberized"shopping cart guard"trim or the chrome trim adhesive wears out and I've been using a strong weatherstrip glue to keep the pieces on the vehicle. None of the repaired areas have come off again. In the images I've highlighted two areas of corrosion that may need attention to keep the body in peak shape for the future. On the underside, the frame and body were coated in the past and they are still holding up very well.
All tires are new since last summer and are severe weather/winter rated. They perform very well in the snow especially for a large RWD vehicle. The full size spare in the trunk is an older, all weather type. I have used sand bags over the axle in the trunk which definitely seemed to help on bad weather days.
Moving on to the interior: everything inside the vehicle works as far as I've used them. All the electrical controls, switches, every window, power lock, light switch (there are many), and dashboard button is operational. When I bought it, the radio was a touchscreen multimedia deck bolted under the dash where the ashtray and cigar lighter were supposed to go and I've since restored the factory radio and reinstalled the pull-out ashtray. The radio works perfectly, but the speakers are worn out and are quiet or crackle in right front, left front, and right rear corners. The power antenna has also been repaired with a new cable. The driver window motor was worn out and was replaced with a used part from the previous owner which works for now but may need a real replacement soon. The passenger front window may need attention in the future but works well at this time.
As with a 30 year old vehicle, some wear and tear should be expected. The center console/armrest is slightly off it's bench hinge but lays flat and opens/closes compartments normally. The driver door control panel has been cracked in the past and I've repaired it with glue as best as possible. Some loose fitting components and rattles are present inside, but not overwhelming. The headliner is in perfect condition, no complaints.
The safety feature of the standard driver air bag has unfortunately been disabled in the past. I found that the horn was inoperative and while repairing the horn switch in the steering wheel I found that the air bag clock spring had been removed. There is a live air bag in the steering wheel but it has no trigger. I thought about setting off the air bag to permanently disable it, but it would ruin the steering wheel cover which I'd rather leave intact. I fabricated a horn switch to repair the awesome 4-horn Buick Roadmaster sound which now works with the steering wheel buttons. I have also replaced the bulbs in the dashboard backlighting and found that the airbag lamp was missing. I did not replace it.
Lastly, the mechanicals, engine, transmission, and other working parts that make the car "GO": This GM 5.7-liter (350 cubic-inch Chevy family)L05, throttle body fuel-injected engine is not a powerhouse or particularly fast, but it will get you on the expressway without hesitation. Maintenance items like the water pump, timing chain, spark plugs, plug wires, and distributor cap and rotor have all been replaced by me in the past year. Additionally, I rebuilt the throttle body including the throttle shaft brass bushings to repair air leaks. The timing has been checked and adjusted. The engine has been out of the vehicle in the past year to repair a very bad oil leak at the rear crankshaft seal and it has been dry ever since. Other seals have also been replaced at the valve covers, intake manifold, and oil pan gasket. The coolant has also been changed. It will be due for oil service soon as I am still driving it. The result is this engine is in the best condition it's ever been in 100K miles and I feel it should last for another 100K or more with proper care.
The transmission is a 4L60/TH-7004R unit (not the 4L60-E with transmission control module). It's not remarkable or special in any way as it shifts smoothly and delivers plenty of torque to the wheels. I've had absolutely no issues with its performance. Power steering is floaty as expected but operates smoothly without noise or complaints. I performed a wheel alignment within the past year with the new tires. While not necessarily important to the running and driving of the vehicle, I should disclose that I found the air conditioning is still charged with R12 refrigerant. It has not been retrofitted to post-1994 refrigerant R134 which may require some attention in the future but functions perfectly during my ownership.
My final word is that this is a "normal car". This is a veteran daily driver. A survivor of the age. It is among the most-senior "regular cars" that can be driven without special attention or care aside from normal maintenance.Parts are inexpensive and still widely available for when you do need eventual maintenance on this GM-family engine and transmission. But except forthe plastic parts, you don't have to baby it. The Buick Roadmaster will go up mountains, cross continents, and carry you in comfort on any average American road today. It is a solid running, driving car that can easily compete with any modern car for amenities and basic performance.
My hope is that I can pass this along in better condition than when I found it to a buyer that appreciates comfort, style, and a well-maintained machine. I've done my best within reason to keep this as factory stock as possible and disclosed the changes and current condition of the vehicle. I may have left out some details I've forgotten. If, after reading, you have any questions or photo requests please don't hesitate to send me a message or arrange for a local inspection.
Thanks again for looking.
