1960 RAMBLER AMERICAN SUPER 2 DOOR WAGON. LOOKING FOR A FATHER SON PROJECT WHILE ON VACATION IN THE OZARKS OF ARKANSAS, I FOUND THIS CAR IN THE BACK OF AN OLD GAS STATION IN 2007. IT WAS ALL THERE AND IN INCREDIBLE TIME CAPSULE CONDITION. WHEN I INQUIRED, THE GUY SAID IT HAD BEEN THERE SINCE THE LATE 1980s. HE SAID HE WOULD SELL IT "FOR THE RIGHT PRICE". WE STRUCK A DEAL AND I PICKED IT UP THE FOLLOWING WEEK. IT WASN'T UNTIL I GOT IT HOME (pics on trailer)THAT I REALIZED HOW GOOD THE CONDITION WAS! FLOOR PANS WERE HONEST TO GOD STILL GLOSSY ORIGINAL PAINT. STRAIGHT BODY LINES, EVEN SEAMS, HOOD, DOOR, TAILGATE AND HATCH, ALL FUNCTION, OPEN AND CLOSE AS NEW OR BETTER. WINDOW SLIDES NEED REPLACING (most any glass company has them) AND DOOR GLASS REGULATOR BUSHINGS (for sale online)) LEAVE SOME TO BE DESIRED. ALL HUBCAPS AND ORIGINAL WHEELS WERE THERE. MAINTENANCE LEDGER IN THE GLOVE BOX. ALL THE ORIGINAL INTERIOR WAS THERE EXCEPT IT HAD HOUSE CARPET LAID IN THE FLOOR. A BIT RAGGED IN THE FRONT SEAT BUT HEADLINER, DOOR PANELS ETC WERE INTACT. EVEN THE RAIN GUTTERS ARE CHERRY (SEE PICS). I INSTALLED A BATTERY TO FIND ALL ELECTRICS FUNCTIONAL. ENGINE WAS SEIZED. LONG STORY BUT, WHEN LOOKING FOR A ROOF RACK (side bars bent), I FOUND A CUSTOM SHOP IN SOUTH CAROLINA THAT HAD A REALLY NICELY RESTORED ONE (A CALENDER CAR). THEY CONTRACTED TO DO MODERN ROD CONVERSION WITH IT. 4.3 GM, VINTAGE A/C, FAT MAN SUSPENSION ETC. AND THE ROOF RACK HAD TO GO! AFTER SOME DISCUSSION, HE OFFERED TO SELL ME EVERYTHING BUT THE SHELL IF I COULD WAIT UNTIL HE DISMANTLED IT. . HE ACTUALLY CALLED ME 6 MONTHS LATER TO COMPLETE THE DEAL. THE WHITE ONE PICTURED IS HIS FINISHED PRODUCT. SO, INSTALLED THAT ENGINE, REPLACED CLUTCH, BRAKE MECHANICS AND HYDRAULICS, EXHAUST, IGNITION COMPONENTS. SPENT WAY TOO MUCH ON THE INTERIOR FOR THE DOME LIGHT TO QUIT WORKING, WHEELS AND TIRES AND UREKA! IT STARTS, RUNS, STOPS AND STEERS LIKE A 1960 MODEL AMC. VEHICLE IS UNRESTORED. CABLES ARE STICKY AND NEEDS SOME LOVE IN A FEW AREAS. GLASS IS ALL GOOD, BRIGHTWORK IS ALL THERE. NEW WINDLACE, TRACK STRIPS AND FUZZIES. SMOKES ON START UP BUT DISSAPATES AFTER A FEW. I HAVE EXTRA DIFF, OD TRANS, FRONT SUSPENSION AND MANY OTHER PARTS FROM DONOR AS PARTS INSURANCE POLICY. LITTLE CAR IS AWESOME AND TAKES ON A DIFFERENT DIMENSION DEPENDING ON VIEWPOINT IN A WALK AROUND. IT IS NOT NEAR SO SMALL AS A METROPOLITAN BUT SIMILIAR IN DESIGN. FAST FORWARD...MY BOYS GOT INTO SPORTS AND TURBO CARS. NOW, 18 YEARS LATER, I HAVE MY CARS AND NO ROOM OR DESIRE TO GO FURTHER WITH THIS ONE. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE OF THESE THAT WASN'T A RUST BUCKET, A POORLY DONE HALF RAGGED V8 SWAP OR FULL BLOWN RADICAL HOT ROD. VEHICLE HAS SO MANY POSSIBILITIES DEPENDING ON YOUR STYLE. OBVIOUSLY PREP WORK BUT VIRTUALLY NO BODY WORK TO PAINT. ZERO IF YOU WANT TO SCUFF WITH 00 STEEL WOOL FOR A MATTE LOOK. OR BUFF TO SHINE AS IS. THERE IS NO WAY TO DEPICT HOW CLEAN, SOLID AND ORIGINAL IT IS EXCEPT TO SEE IT IN PERSON. IT HAD A PARTIAL REPAINT IN THE LATE 70s? CAR HAS BEEN GARAGE/SHOP KEPT FOR AT LEAST THE LAST 40 YEARS.
